The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have confirmed that Tasi Calvin, better known as Bobi Giant, a well-known National Unity Platform (NUP) activist and bodyguard to opposition leader Bobi Wine, is currently in their custody. His arrest has set off heated debates and concern among supporters of the opposition.
Witnesses say Bobi Giant was seized by heavily armed operatives dressed in military uniforms and swiftly transported by drone to a secure detention facility. He is now being held under strict supervision as the army continues its investigations.
UPDF spokesperson Colonel Felix Kulaigye explained that Bobi Giant’s detention followed his participation in a military-style parade earlier this year at NUP headquarters in Kavule, Kampala. Col Kulaigye said the parade was viewed as a challenge to government authority and raised security concerns at the highest levels of leadership.
The spokesperson assured the public that Bobi Giant is being treated according to military detention procedures. He added that the interrogation is intended to gather information about activities the army believes could threaten national security.
Observers note that the arrest reflects Uganda’s tense political climate, where opposition figures are often closely monitored. Bobi Giant’s role as Bobi Wine’s bodyguard has made him a high-profile target, and his detention is already drawing attention beyond Uganda.
UPDF officials have said that once interrogations are complete, Bobi Giant will be formally taken to court to face trial. However, details about the timing and exact charges remain unclear. Authorities insist the process will follow legal procedures.
Meanwhile, NUP supporters have strongly condemned the arrest, calling it politically motivated. They are demanding transparency about Bobi Giant’s condition and legal rights. With tensions rising, many are watching closely to see what happens next and what this means for Uganda’s political future.
