Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja caused a stir on Saturday, September 6, during a fundraising event for the construction of Nyendo Sub-Parish in Masaka City. While pledging government support for the project, Nabbanja made controversial remarks about opposition parties, praising Mathias Mpuuga’s Democratic Front (DF) and mocking the National Unity Platform (NUP) as “weed smokers.”
The event, attended by local leaders, residents, and political figures, was organized to raise funds for church construction. Nabbanja contributed 300 iron sheets and UGX 30 million on behalf of the government, highlighting NRM’s commitment to community development. However, it was her comments about opposition parties that dominated discussions.
Speaking in Luganda, Nabbanja accused NUP leaders of being influenced by drugs, which she claimed affects their decision-making. “Aba NUP bakolera mu njaga,” she said, suggesting that the party’s leadership operates under the influence of marijuana. Her remarks drew loud cheers from NRM supporters but quickly sparked debates across the political spectrum.
Turning her attention to Mpuuga’s Democratic Front, Nabbanja praised the faction for breaking away from NUP, calling it a smart move. She invited DF members to officially join NRM, describing it as a stable and visionary party. “Nasaba aba DF okwegatta ku NRM mu butongole,” she said, appealing for unity under the ruling party’s umbrella.
Her comments have divided opinions. NRM supporters applauded her boldness, while NUP members dismissed the remarks as political propaganda aimed at tarnishing their image. Critics argued that the Prime Minister should have focused on pressing issues like corruption, poverty, and poor service delivery instead of attacking opposition figures.
Political analysts suggest Nabbanja’s invitation to Mpuuga’s group is a calculated strategy to weaken NUP’s influence in Buganda, one of its strongest regions. By absorbing breakaway factions, NRM is believed to be consolidating power ahead of the next general elections.
The Masaka Post Media described the event’s atmosphere as lively, with locals engaged in debates on both development and politics. As the political season approaches, Nabbanja’s remarks are expected to fuel further discussions on opposition unity, NRM dominance, and the growing divisions within Uganda’s opposition parties.
