NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro was reportedly abducted by military personnel and taken to his home, where security operatives allegedly searched for illegal military hardware. The incident has sparked outrage and concern among supporters and the public.
The abduction occurred while Waiswa was attending court proceedings at Kawempe Magistrates Court. He had stepped out briefly to handle personal matters when military officers reportedly seized him.
According to NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, Waiswa was taken shortly after leaving the courtroom. Witnesses said he was grabbed and forced into a silver Noah vehicle, registration number UAK 368K, before being driven to an unknown location. The attack happened in broad daylight, leaving bystanders and court attendees shocked.
NUP supporters have strongly condemned the military’s actions, calling them both cowardly and criminal. Many view the incident as an attempt to intimidate opposition voices and send a warning to other political actors.
Political analysts have warned that such behavior undermines the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. They argue that courtrooms should remain safe spaces for legal proceedings, free from harassment or violence by security forces.
Party officials are demanding Waiswa’s immediate release and accountability for the officers involved. They stress that no one should be forcibly removed from a court session while exercising their legal rights or attending to personal matters.
As of now, Alex Waiswa’s whereabouts remain unknown. NUP supporters continue to monitor the situation closely, highlighting Uganda’s tense political climate and raising urgent concerns about the safety and freedom of opposition members during official proceedings.
